Memories of Hazel

On the last day of school, Hazel & Ivy's school organized a butterfly release in honor of Hazel. Ivy got to help release the butterflies with the whole school gathered and family and close friends to see. Students and staff wrote on big signs sharing love for Hazel. It was a beautiful and emotional tribute.

Ivy again. I have another memory .we as in me and hazel always got the house dirty from are sand box .lol Ivy.

Hi it's Ivy . and I wanted to show you a nother memory . a year ago me and hazel got to go to a bunny peting zoo. that is a pic of hazel with a bunny named snow ball .

I'm Ivy, Hazel's twin sister, and I have a lot of funny memories with hazel so......................
I wanted to tell and show you some of them

Here's a picture of a funny memory of hazel and me when we were babies .the funny memory is we would always stare at each other . and we would entertain our selves when we tooted in are faces.

Rapunzel was always Hazel's favorite Disney princess. This is a Rapunzel picture she made when she was only 4.

Pretending was Hazel’s favorite way to play. At my house she loved playing “go to bed on Christmas Eve,” skating or swimming on my tile floor (with specific scripts which had to be repeated each time), playing in the forest (a single dwarf weeping birch in the back yard), and playing “family” with a dollar-store collection of dolls and doll furniture. One day, disappointed that it was time to leave, Hazel said, “But we didn’t get to play!” I asked, “What do you mean? We drew,, blew bubbles, played legos, and played the fairy board game.“ And she replied, “But we didn’t PPPLLLAAAYYY!” If it wasn’t pretending it didn’t really count.
Hazel and Ivy loved to put on shows-dancing, singing, cheer, puppet shows….. And with all they learned at family-room showtimes and their mom’s dance class recitals, by the time they were 5, they could greet the audience and introduce their acts with the aplomb of a veteran MC.
When the girls played house, there was always a lot of “Sweetie” and “Honey” in their scripts. It was obvious that they heard a lot of love and tenderness from their parents in real life.
Hazel and Ivy loved the jetted tub in our bathroom. With a couple squirts of dish soap, the jets could whip up an avalanche of suds. Hazel loved to let the jets run until the bubbles were above her shoulders. Like many things with Hazel, the bigger, the better.

On the 18th I took a wrong turn on the way home from work and ended up driving towards Auburn instead of Seattle. I was tired so I decided to detour to Grandma and Grandpa’s house to take a nap instead of trying to turn around. When I woke up Hazel and Ivy were there picking up Ruby. We had a much to short conversation about the games on Grandpa’s I-pad, and then they were on their way home with car treats. I wish I would have taken more time to play, but I’ll always be thankful for that little moment.

I never had the opportunity to meet Hazel. But, her dad and I worked together at Microsoft for six years, and I was always happy to hear updates about their beautiful family. I looked forward to all of us meeting in person one day.

The events of May in Hazel's life have shaken me to my foundation. My eldest daughter was born in Seattle just a few days before Hazel, and it breaks my heart that Hazel did not get to celebrate her 8th birthday.

But, I am also deeply inspired by the courage that Heath, Heather, and their families have shown by building this site, sharing their story publicly, and giving us all a reason to slow down and take better care. Hazel's legacy lives on through the Hazel Pledge, and the love, faith, and strength that her and her family have filled all of us with.

This was your cousin Zoey’s first time meeting you. We drove from Utah to Washington, a 12-hour drive, to meet you and your sister. We loved you the moment we met you. You were my girls’ first Sabin cousin. We are so lucky to have known you and loved you.

We’ll miss you, sweet Hazel.

I used to see Heather when I looked at Hazel, now I see Hazel every time I look at Heather. Love you Hazel. Skip on, sweet girl :)
